UEFA, Europe's governing football body, has released a statement saying it has "lost confidence" in Gianni Infantino. It said the "shabby, back room, opaque deal he hatched and tried to force through was anything but transparent". It comes after the FIFA boss was forced to scrap his plans to sell off a stake in the World Cup after global backlash. UEFA earlier threatened that its members would boycott FIFA competitions if the plans were not abandoned, with the AFC and CONCACAF joining its opposition. It said it welcomed FIFA's decision to withdraw the plan and thanked the "fans, leagues, clubs, players, individuals, associations and confederations that opposed the scheme". The statement said: "We cannot keep going on like this with secret schemes on fast track timescales, cooked up by faceless individuals and of dubious benefit to the game. We must identify those responsible and hold them to account." It also says the "current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family".
